This is an alarming new trend. I was recently sent a cheque in the post for compensation due to me for a badly fitted kitchen. It arrived by general post which I found quite alarming (especially as I had been promised a signed for delivery) but of course relieved it reached me.
Can the criteria to change your name by deed poll be so easy meet? I don't know but sending or receiving large amounts by cheque should always be managed with caution. It's almost like sending cash in a birthday card! We need to make it harder for the fraudsters to get hold of our money.
Fraudsters are temporarily changing their names officially so they can cash cheques meant for other people.In this alarming new scam they intercept cheques sent through the post, change their names to that of the intended payee by deed poll — before cashing them in.
